This qualification reflects the role of workers who assist teachers and support student learning in a range of classroom settings under the guidance of a teacher or other educational professional. At this level, workers may be involved in facilitation of learning for a range of instructional groupings, including for those students in need of additional support. In these roles, the education support worker sources and analyses information from diverse sources, may work with limited direct supervision and could provide guidance to other workers. Education support workers work mainly with students in classroom settings in primary or secondary schools, as defined by State/Territory legislation.
To achieve this qualification, the individual must have completed a total of least 100 hours of work in a classroom environment catering to primary or secondary school students, within at least one school in Australia as detailed in the Assessment Requirements of units of competency. The total number of hours may be applied collectively across all units of competency that include the requirement for workplace hours.

No occupational licensing, certification or specific legislative requirements apply to this qualification at the time of publication.

Qualification will be delivered over 52 weeks.

To be eligible for this course, Learners must demonstrate that they have sound literacy and numeracy skills to a standard of at least Australian Year 12 school or Australian Certificate III, or an equivalent. Applicants will be required to complete an ACSF language, literacy and numeracy (LLN) assessment.

Employment outcomes resulting from the completion of this qualification may include the following roles:

  • Education Support worker
  • Education assistant (special needs)

To be awarded the qualification of CHC40221 – Certificate IV in School Based Education Support learners must successfully complete a total of Total number of units = 17

  • 13 core units
  • 4 elective units

All electives chosen contribute to a valid, industry-supported vocational
outcome.

Assessment methods vary as per the unit of competency requirement, generally, assessment methods may include all or some of the following:
• Written Questionnaires
• Scenarios / Case studies
• Worplace Assessment tasks
• Projects
• Workplace observations

The learner is required to achieve competency in all units in order to complete the course and be awarded this qualification.

Credit transfer applies to situations where learners have completed units at another provider identical to those in which they plan to enrol. Credit will be granted in accordance with the Credit Transfer procedure. To apply for credit transfer please complete the credit transfer application form available from head office and attach copies of verified documents to support the application. A reduction in tuition fees will be applied if Credit Transfer is granted.
