This qualification reflects the role of educators in early childhood education and care who work in regulated children’s education and care services in Australia. Educators at this level are responsible for designing and implementing curriculum that meets the requirements of an approved learning framework and for maintaining compliance in other areas of service operations. They use specialised knowledge and analyse and apply theoretical concepts to diverse work situations. They may have responsibility for supervision of volunteers or other educators.
Early childhood educators work in long day care centres, family day care, pre-schools or kindergartens.
To achieve this qualification, the individual must have completed a total of at least 280 hours of work in a regulated children’s education and care service in Australia as detailed in the Assessment Requirements of units of competency. The total number of hours may be applied collectively across all units of competency that include the requirement for workplace hours.
Qualification will be delivered for 52 weeks.
Entry to this qualification is open to individuals who hold:
CHC30121 Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care (or its equivalent successor)
OR
CHC30113 Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care.
Alternatively, individuals may hold:
An Australian diploma in Early Childhood Education and Care
OR
An Australian diploma or certificate III in Children’s Services.
AND
Demonstrate at least 12 months of cumulative employment (full-time equivalent) within the last 5 years in a regulated education and care service in Australia, supported by verifiable evidence.
OR
Hold the CHCSS00147 Entry into Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care.
Prior to enrolment or commencement of training you will be required to complete a literacy and numeracy assessment and a pre-training interview. These will assist with determining your suitability to the course, verify your training plan, and identify any learning support needs.
To achieve this qualification, the individual must have completed a total of least 280 hours of work in a regulated children’s education and care service in Australia as detailed in the Assessment Requirements of units of competency. The total number of hours may be applied collectively across all units of competency that include the requirement for workplace hours. Students will be assisted by the Work Placement Officers to find suitable work placement opportunities in reputable establishments. Students may be required to do more hours in order to demonstrate competency. Police check and working with children check will be required when undertaking the practical placement.
No occupational licensing, certification or specific legislative requirements apply to this qualification at the time of publication.

To be awarded the qualification of CHC50121 – Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care, learners must successfully complete a total of 15 consisting of:
- 12 core units
- 3 elective units
All electives are selected to contribute to a valid, industry-supported vocational outcome.
Assessment methods vary as per the unit of competency requirement. Generally, assessment methods may include all or some of the following:
• Written Questionnaires
• Scenarios / Case studies
• Workplace Assessment Tasks
• Projects
• Workplace observations
The learner is required to achieve competency in fifteen (15) units in order to complete the course and be awarded this qualification.
ACPS has a Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) Policy, to ensure that an individual’s prior learning, achieved through formal and informal training, work experience or other life experiences, is appropriately recognized.
Credit transfer applies to situations where learners have completed units at another provider identical to those in which they plan to enrol. Credit will be granted in accordance with the Credit Transfer procedure. To apply for credit transfer please complete the credit transfer application form available from head office and attach copies of verified documents to support the application. A reduction in tuition fees will be applied if Credit Transfer is granted.
